The Pack-It-and-Stay-Put Guide to Rocklahoma

Once my car rolls through the Rocklahoma gates at Rockin’ Red Dirt Ranch in Pryor, OK, I have exactly one goal for it: stay parked until the party is completely over.

That means I am not packing for a cute overnight campout. I am building a temporary home base that can handle Oklahoma heat, red dirt, long days, loud nights, primitive camping and the occasional surprise from Mother Nature. I remember Mudlahoma and lost some good gear that year. At the same time, everything I carry from camp into the concert grounds has to clear Rocklahoma’s much tighter gate policies.

So this is really two packing lists in one: the gear that makes camp livable and the smaller, policy-friendly kit that gets me through a full day inside the festival. I have included two printable checklists below so you can pack them separately, check them twice and avoid donating perfectly good gear to the security line.

Important: Rocklahoma policies can change. The official rules and graphics included at the end of this post are the final authority. Check the official Rocklahoma information page before you leave home.

The Two-Zone Packing Strategy

The campground and concert grounds are not the same thing.

Outside food, drinks, coolers and full-size camping gear are welcome in the campground, but they cannot follow you into the concert site. The campground allows supplies such as lanterns, flashlights, lawn chairs, first-aid gear and small propane cooking equipment. The concert grounds require a much lighter load: an approved clear bag, a policy-compliant chair if you bring one, non-aerosol sunscreen, a small charger and the correct kind of water bottle.

I recommend packing your bags for two obvious zones:

• Camp gear: shelter, sleep system, cooler, food, clothing, toiletries and campsite supplies.
• Gate-ready gear: one approved clear bag and one approved chair or lawn blanket, packed together where you can grab them without dismantling camp.

That separation makes the daily walk to the gates easier and reduces the odds of accidentally carrying a banned item.

Lodging and Campsite: Build a Home Base

Rocklahoma campsites are 20 by 40 feet, allow one vehicle per site and are primitive—no electric or water hookups. Car camping is allowed, but your vehicle cannot run while parked. Plan your shade, power and sleep setup accordingly.

Shelter

My inflatable tent choice and the reasons behind it are covered in my Road to Rocklahoma camping post. Start there if you are still choosing your shelter.

Beyond the tent itself, I would pack:

• Tent footprint or heavy-duty tarp sized to stay under the tent edges
• Extra guylines
• Plastic tent stakes; metal stakes are prohibited
• Shade canopy with sandbags or other weights
• Outdoor rug or inexpensive ground mat
• Dustpan and small brush
• Heavy-duty trash bags
• Weatherproof storage totes

Sleep and Comfort

Festival exhaustion is real, and a miserable sleep setup compounds fast. Bring the mattress or sleeping pad you have already tested, plus bedding that can handle warm nights and an unexpected temperature drop.

• Inflatable air bed, cot or sleeping pad
• Battery-powered air pump and spare batteries or :GASP: a manual air pump
• Sleeping bag or sheets and blanket
• Pillow in a washable case
• Earplugs and sleep mask – Those generators get loud and the sun sure does rise early when you partied all night!
• Approved camping chair or folding stool
• Light blanket or towel for the concert grounds

Rocklahoma allows common director chairs, low beach chairs, camping chairs, folding stools, and seat cushions. Loveseat chairs, zero-gravity chairs, canopy chairs, metal folding chairs, reclining loungers and rockers with obstructions beneath the seat are not allowed inside the festival. Light, Power and Safety

Campground lighting should be useful for safety and convenience without becoming a beacon aimed into your neighbor’s tent.

• Portable lanterns
• Solar lights to mark out tent tie-downs and tripping hazards
• Headlamp or flashlight
• Spare batteries
• Fire extinguisher
• First-aid kit
• Power station or generator that complies with festival rules
• Outdoor-rated extension cords only if your power setup requires them

Generators of 6,500 watts or less with factory exhaust are allowed. Larger units require advance approval from Rocklahoma. If you bring propane, keep it in manufacturer-approved or disposable containers. Small propane cook stoves and grills are allowed; open fires, campfires and fire pits are not.

Health and Beauty: Dirt Happens

Festival beauty is less about pretending the dirt does not exist and more about staying comfortable enough to keep going.

The Shower Kit

Pack your shower supplies together in one grab-and-go tote:

• Shower shoes
• Quick-dry towel
• Hanging toiletry bag
• Soap, shampoo and conditioner
• Toothbrush, toothpaste and floss
• Deodorant for the love of all that is holy!
• Hairbrush, ties and clips
• Wet wipes and body wipes
• Toilet paper and tissues
• Feminine care products
• Hand sanitizer

Heat, Sun and First Aid

Choose non-aerosol sunscreen if you want to carry it through the concert gates; aerosol cans are prohibited inside.

• Broad-spectrum non-aerosol sunscreen
• SPF lip balm
• After-sun lotion
• Anti-chafe balm
• Bug repellent for camp
• Blister bandages
• Pain reliever
• Antacid and stomach medicine
• Allergy medicine
• Any prescriptions or licensed controlled substances in their original labeled containers

Rocklahoma prohibits loose or unlabeled pills in the campground. Keep medication in its original container. Medically necessary items may enter the festival after inspection. Cannabis products are prohibited inside the concert grounds, and must be secured in original packaging and maintained by a licensed med card holder in the campgrounds. DUI laws and open container laws apply to medical cannabis in Oklahoma as well so don’t be a dummy!

Nutrition and Hydration: Feed the Machine

The campground allows outside food and beverages; the parking and concert grounds do not. A cooler and a simple food plan can save money, time and energy.

Camp Kitchen

• Cooler and a second drink cooler if space allows
• Bagged ice or frozen water bottles
• Drinking water
• COFFEE SUPPLIES! I personally go with Black Rifle, cold brewed so I don’t have to fuss with heating water in a field.
• Electrolyte packets
• Shelf-stable snacks
• Easy breakfasts
• Sandwich ingredients or wraps
• Protein-forward meals
• Fruit that travels well
• Reusable plates and utensils
• Paper towels and napkins
• Can opener if your menu requires one
• Small propane stove or grill, if desired

Inside the concert grounds, you may carry one factory-sealed water bottle up to 20 ounces OR one empty clear refillable plastic bottle. Metal bottles, glass, Yetis, Hydro Flasks, CamelBaks and refillable hydration packs are not allowed. Water stations are marked on the official venue map.

The campground general stores stock ice, food, drinks and camping necessities. As I noted in my Rocklahoma Vendor Showcase, those stores are a lifesaver for a forgotten item—but inventory can get picked over after the first day or two. Pack essentials at home, then shop early if you need ice or a last-minute rescue.

Fashion: Dress for the Dirt, Heat and Long Haul

Rocklahoma fashion should still look like you, but every piece needs to survive sweat, dust and miles of walking.

My packing formula:

• Breathable tops and tanks
• Shorts or lightweight bottoms
• One warm layer for every festival day
• Rain poncho
• Bandanas or wild rags – Crazy how useful those are!
• Broken-in boots or supportive walking shoes
• Camp shoes or slides
• More socks and underwear than I think I need
• Hat, sunglasses and bandanas
• Sleep clothes
• One complete clean outfit sealed for the ride home

Do not break in new shoes at Rocklahoma. Your feet will remember the betrayal.

Tech: Power Without the Clutter

The goal is enough power for navigation, messages, photos and emergency contact—not dragging an office into the field… unless you’re me of course.

At Camp

• Phone
• Charging cables and backups
• Wall adapter for pre-arrival stops
• Car charger for use before parking
• Power banks
• Portable power station if needed
• Battery fan
• Lantern and headlamp
• Small point-and-shoot camera, if desired

Through the Concert Gates

Cell phones, small portable chargers and small point-and-shoot digital cameras are allowed. Professional or removable-lens cameras, GoPros, audio/video recorders, laptops, tablets, selfie sticks, drones and lasers are not.

Two-way radios and walkie-talkies are also prohibited in the campground, so create a meetup plan before the signal gets crowded. Pick a landmark and a time instead of assuming every text will arrive immediately.

Money, Wristbands and Important Information

Rocklahoma is cashless. Accepted payment options include credit cards, RFID wristbands, tap-to-pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay and ACH. Reverse ATMs will be available onsite.

Before leaving home:

• Put on or safely store your festival wristband as instructed
• Load funds to the RFID wristband if you plan to use it
• Bring a government-issued photo ID
• Add cards to your phone’s wallet
• Pack a physical backup card
• Screenshot maps, schedules and confirmation details – You may not have a cell signal in the field.

Unused wristband funds may be refunded at festival bars until the final Sunday set, then at the general store until 10 a.m. Monday.

What Stays Home

This is not the complete prohibited-items list, but these are the packing mistakes most likely to cause trouble:

• Glass of any kind
• Metal tent stakes
• Fireworks, tiki torches, campfires or fire pits
• Weapons or anything usable as a weapon, including knives, pepper spray and hammers
• Loose or unlabeled pills
• Drones and RC vehicles
• Walkie-talkies and two-way radios
• Large bags, backpacks and duffels at the concert gates
• Outside food, drinks and coolers inside the concert grounds
• Metal or glass drink containers
• Aerosol cans inside the festival
• Hydration packs and CamelBaks
• Professional cameras and recording equipment
• Selfie sticks, tablets and laptops
• Glow sticks, balloons, beach balls, confetti and totems
• Pets other than qualifying service animals

When in doubt, leave it home or verify it on the official FAQ before departure.

These grounds are a working farm & Hay fields outside of festival season and all of these rules are made with that in mind. A single metal stake forgotten in the campgrounds can cause thousands of dollars worth of damage or an uncontrollable wildfire with a single spark off a cutter blade. Park It and Party

The best packing list is not the one with the most stuff. It is the one that keeps small problems from stealing time from the weekend and forcing you to stay clocked in when you want to clock out. I want shade when the sun is brutal, dry socks when the weather turns, power when my phone hits ten percent, water before I feel thirsty and a clean outfit waiting for my late night shower. If I plan it right, the car goes into park on arrival and stays there until Rocklahoma has wrung every final ounce of fun out of us.
